Volunteer
As they do that, of course, each of them has the chance to develop new abilities, and to enjoy new experiences and friendships (while, incidentally, having a good time!).
They do not receive any payment but are fully reimbursed for any expenses they incur.
Within The Action Group there is a broad range of exciting opportunities volunteers can choose:
- Befriending:
This means spending time as a friend of someone with a learning disability doing the type of things friends do – like going to the cinema, the gym, out for a meal or just talking and listening to music. - Easter/Summer Playschemes: These are run during school holidays to give parents a break during the day. Volunteers can spend a hectic but fun time supporting young children in enjoyable but supervised play.
- Summer Leisure Schemes: These are similar to Playschemes but are for young adults. They are helped to enjoy a wide range of activities during part of the summer holidays.
The Action Group acknowledges the commitment, responsibility, enthusiasm and value that volunteers bring to everyone who uses its services. In return it makes sure that they are fully valued and supported and that they receive appropriate training and expenses.
Most of all it tries to ensure that they get as much out of volunteering as they put in. It is quietly proud of the fact that many who begin as volunteers in its organisation, enjoy it so much that they end up staying, often in a paid job!
